The KP Index measures geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 to 9, indicating the potential for auroral displays. An aurora forecast, however, uses the KP Index along with other data to predict the likelihood and intensity of auroras at specific locations and times.

Understanding the KP Index

The KP Index is a global geomagnetic activity indicator that reflects disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field caused by solar wind and other solar phenomena. It is measured on a scale from 0 (very calm) to 9 (extremely stormy). Generally, a KP Index of 5 or higher suggests that auroras might be visible at lower latitudes than usual.

The KP Index is updated every three hours, providing a near real-time measure of geomagnetic activity. While it serves as a useful tool for gauging the general potential for aurora visibility, it doesn't provide specific details about where or when the lights will appear.

What Is an Aurora Forecast?

An aurora forecast is a more comprehensive prediction of auroral activity that incorporates the KP Index along with other factors such as solar wind speed, density, and the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). These forecasts aim to predict not only the likelihood of auroras but also their intensity and the best viewing times and locations.

Unlike the KP Index, which is a single number, aurora forecasts are typically presented as maps or charts showing the probability of aurora visibility across different regions. They can provide more localized and time-specific information, making them invaluable for aurora chasers planning their outings.

How to Use Both for Aurora Chasing

For the best chance of witnessing the northern lights, use both the KP Index and aurora forecasts in tandem. Start by checking the KP Index to get a sense of current geomagnetic activity levels. If the index is high, consult an aurora forecast to identify the best locations and times for viewing.

Remember that weather conditions also play a significant role in aurora visibility. Clear, dark skies away from city lights are ideal. Therefore, even with a high KP Index and promising aurora forecast, cloudy skies can obstruct the view.

What Kp do you actually need?

Kp runs 0–9, and the higher it climbs the further from the pole the auroral oval stretches. So the number you need is not universal — it depends entirely on where you stand. Every destination we track carries its own threshold, derived from its geomagnetic latitude: the Kp at which the oval reaches roughly overhead. It is a floor, not a target — a place that needs Kp 1 also sees the lights at Kp 5, and sees them more often than anywhere further south.
