Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Svolvær: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why September and October and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Svolvær's season runs late september to early april.
Svolvær is the main town and transport hub of the Lofoten islands — the practical base if you want Lofoten's granite-and-sea scenery without driving the whole archipelago.
Where to stand in Svolvær
Get away from the harbour lights: the road out toward Kabelvåg and Henningsvær, or any north-facing shoreline on the outer coast. Lofoten cloud moves fast, so stay flexible.
