Why these months?

Two things decide your odds in Stewart Island (Rakiura): darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright summer months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why June and July and May tend to edge out the dead of winter. Stewart Island (Rakiura)'s season runs southern winter — march to september.

Stewart Island is New Zealand's southernmost inhabited land and the best aurora-australis base in the country. Its Māori name, Rakiura, is usually translated as "glowing skies" — and it is a certified International Dark Sky Sanctuary, one of very few in the world.

Where to stand in Stewart Island (Rakiura)

Almost the whole island qualifies, but the southern-facing bays around Oban and the Observation Rock lookout give an unobstructed view toward Antarctica.
