Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Rovaniemi: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why September and October and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Rovaniemi's season runs late august to early april.
Rovaniemi, the "official hometown of Santa Claus," is the most accessible aurora base in Finnish Lapland — direct flights, glass igloos, husky and reindeer farms. It sits right on the Arctic Circle, so it needs slightly stronger activity than the far-north spots but is far easier to reach.
Where to stand in Rovaniemi
Get away from the city glow: the Arktikum riverbank, Ounasvaara hill, or any of the glass-roofed igloo resorts a short drive out. The glass igloos let you watch from bed.
