Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Oulu: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why October and November and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Oulu's season runs october to march.
Oulu is the largest city in northern Finland and the cheapest way to get within reach of the lights — but it is well south of the oval and brightly lit, so it takes an active night and a drive out of town.
Where to stand in Oulu
You must leave the city: the Bay of Bothnia shoreline and the islands north-west of Oulu give a dark, flat northern horizon over the ice.
