Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Muonio: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why September and October and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Muonio's season runs late september to early april.
Muonio sits on the Swedish border in western Lapland, next to Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park — the area around Pallas is measured as having some of the cleanest air in Europe, which is the same thing as saying the sky is genuinely dark.
Where to stand in Muonio
The frozen lakes and the park roads north of the village. Open fell country means a low, unobstructed horizon in most directions.
