Why these months?

Two things decide your odds in Kautokeino: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why October and November and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Kautokeino's season runs late september to early april.

Kautokeino is a Sámi village deep on the Finnmark plateau, high and dry and a long way from any coast. It trades amenities for darkness and a high share of clear nights.

Where to stand in Kautokeino

Step outside the village in any direction; the plateau gives an unbroken horizon. Winter temperatures here are severe — plan warmth before you plan photography.
