Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Jokkmokk: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why October and November and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Jokkmokk's season runs october to march.
Jokkmokk sits on the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland and is best known for its Sámi winter market each February — which lands squarely in aurora season. It is south of the oval's centre, so it rewards a moderately active night.
