Why these months?

Two things decide your odds in Invercargill: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright summer months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why June and July and May tend to edge out the dead of winter. Invercargill's season runs southern winter — march to september.

Invercargill is the southernmost city in New Zealand and the mainland's closest point to the southern oval — meaningfully better odds than Queenstown or Christchurch, and reachable without a boat or a light aircraft.

Where to stand in Invercargill

Bluff Hill and the Foveaux Strait coast give a clear southern horizon over water. Get out of the city grid first; Invercargill's own lighting will wash out a weak display.
