Why these months?
Two things decide your odds in Hammerfest: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright midnight-sun months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why October and November and February and March tend to edge out the dead of winter. Hammerfest's season runs late september to early april.
Hammerfest is one of the world's northernmost towns, an ice-free Arctic port high above the oval's usual centre. Its geomagnetic latitude is high enough that even a quiet night can produce a display.
Where to stand in Hammerfest
The Salen hill above town is a short climb to a dark panorama; otherwise drive out along the Kvaløya road away from the harbour lighting.
