Why these months?

Two things decide your odds in Dunedin: darkness and activity. You need real darkness — so the bright summer months are out no matter how strong the aurora is. On top of that, geomagnetic storms run statistically stronger around the spring and autumn equinoxes (the Russell–McPherron effect), which is why June and July and May tend to edge out the dead of winter. Dunedin's season runs southern winter — march to september.

Dunedin, on the Otago coast, has one of New Zealand's most active aurora-watching communities — the combination of a southern coastline and a city full of people willing to drive out at 2am on a storm alert.

Where to stand in Dunedin

The Otago Peninsula's south-facing coast — Hoopers Inlet, Sandfly Bay, Tomahawk — puts open ocean between you and the pole with no town lights in the way.
